STORYLINE:
A group of former Hamas hostages, along with the families of those still in captivity, organised a solemn Shabbat reception ceremony Friday near the Israeli Defense Minister’s residence in Kfar Achim to protest the cabinet’s decision to fully occupy Gaza City.
Israel said early Friday that it plans to take over Gaza City, drawing rejection from the Palestinians and international condemnation.
The decision, agreed in a late-night meeting Thursday of its security Cabinet, marks a further escalation of Israel’s 22-month war with Hamas.
It also provoked worries in Israel over the fate of hostages still held in Gaza.
Noah Perry, the daughter of hostage Haim Perry who died in Hamas captivity, urged the government to "stop the war now."
"We know this decision is going to cause a lot of unwanted death of more soldiers and hostages. Take this down. Stop it now! Bring all hostages back in one deal," she said.
Another major ground operation would almost certainly exacerbate the humanitarian catastrophe, in which Israel’s air and ground war has pushed the territory toward famine.
Meanwhile, mediators from Egypt and Qatar are working on a new framework that will include the release of all hostages — dead and alive — in one go in return for an end of the war in Gaza and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the strip, two Arab officials told The Associated Press.
