STORYLINE:
Funerals were held in Lebanon on Sunday to remember and mourn the soldiers killed a day earlier in an explosion in southern Lebanon.

Munitions in an arms depot exploded Saturday as army experts were dismantling them, killing six of and wounding several others, the army said.

Fellow soldiers carried the coffin of Mohammad Ali Shkeir on their shoulders during his funeral on Sunday while his mother cried.

"A soldier carries his life in his hands for the sake of the nation – that is well known. May God accept him as a martyr," said Suheil Shkeir, the father of the soldier.

The incident on Saturday occurred on the edge of the southern village of Zibqin in Tyre province, the army said.

It added that efforts were being made to determine the cause of the blast but gave no further details.

The depot is believed to have been used by the militant group Hezbollah.

The blast took place south of the Litani River in an area where Hezbollah withdrew its fighters under the terms of a ceasefire that ended a 14-month conflict with Israel in November.

Over the past months, Lebanese troops and U.N. peacekeepers have been taking over Hezbollah posts in the area.

"It is not surprising that Mohammad’s martyrdom took place in the south," said Lebanese Army Gen. George Sofia during an address to mourners on Sunday. He added that Shkeir "gave his utmost efforts and sacrifices to carry out the missions entrusted to him and work toward the return of residents to their lands."
