STORYLINE:
The casket carrying the body of Myanmar’s figurehead president Myint Swe was transferred Monday to the military memorial in the capital, Naypyitaw, for a state funeral.
Myint Swe died last Thursday at the age of 75, more than a year after he stopped actively carrying out his presidential duties after he was diagnosed with neurological disorders and peripheral neuropathy disease.
Employees of the military authorities lined the road and paid their respects as the cortège passed.
His body will be cremated at the military cemetery on the outskirts of Naypyitaw later Monday, the last day of a national period of mourning declared in his memory.
Myint Swe became acting president following the military’s seizure of power in February 2021.
The legally elected president Win Myint was arrested and jailed, along with Myanmar’s top leader, Aung San Suu Kyi. The generals claimed they toppled the government because it came to power through massive fraud at the 2020 national poll, but they have never presented credible proof.
Myint Swe, a member of a pro-military party and a former general, was installed by the army as acting president because he held the post of first Vice President.
Legal experts questioned the legitimacy of the move because Win Myint neither stepped down from his post nor was incapacitated.
