STORYLINE:
A wildfire threatened a suburb of Montenegro’s capital Podgorica on Monday as a new heatwave bringing temperatures of 41 degrees Celsius (105 Fahrenheit)
In the hills above Rogami, just a few kilometers north of Podgorica and close to the ruins of the ancient city of Duklja, flames threatened homes before firefighters managed to save several buildings, officials said.
More than 20 fire service vehicles have been deployed in the Podgorica area in an effort to protect residential areas, the head of the capital’s Protection and Rescue Service told the state MINA news agency.
The areas of Piperi and Malo Brdo, as well as the village of Djurkovici, were all affected.
Montenegro’s power distribution company said it cut a 10-kilovolt line in the Piperi area at the request of firefighters because of flames near the route.
Authorities were also dealing with fires near Bijelo Polje in the north east, and the coastal resort village of Canj.
