STORYLINE:
Egypt is engaging with both Israel and Hamas to reach a peace deal in Gaza, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty told journalists in Cairo on Tuesday,
The minister said both sides had reached an agreement on some issues but there were still issues pending.
Abdelatty said Egypt is pushing for a deal based around a framework proposed by U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff.
The deal would include a 60 day ceasefire, release of "some hostages and some Palestinian detainees" and the flow of humanitarian and medical aid into Gaza "without conditions and without restrictions," he said.
He said the main objective remained to bring an end to the war and prepare the ground for the next stage, "which will be creating political horizon, which will be leading to the realization of the Palestinian state."
Abdelatty added that Egypt has already started training "Palestinian elements in our camps" as police forces to help secure Gaza after the war.
The minister didn’t disclose how many are being trained currently but said the aim was to train 5,000 personnel overall.
