“However, Trump misstated the facts and his comments lacked important context about a recent drop in crime in the nation’s capital. Here’s a look at the facts. Trump said crime in DC is quote, getting worse, not getting better. The facts don’t bear this out. The city has recorded a 26% drop in violent crime this year compared to this time last year after a post pandemic peak in 2023. While DC remains one of the nation’s most dangerous big cities, the fact is crime is getting better, not worse. Trump also said homicide data from decades ago isn’t available, but official records from the 1980s and 90s are easily found online and show that the number of homicides routinely exceeded the number seen today. In 1990, for instance, the city reported almost 500 homicides compared to 187 recorded last year. Finally, Trump said the murder rate in Washington today is higher than that of Bogota, Colombia or Mexico City or other cities that have long been considered unsafe. On this one, Trump is correct. DC’s murder rate is higher than many global cities, including some that many Americans would consider less safe. But Trump is leaving out important context. The US in general sees higher violent crime rates than many other countries. And while Washington is among the nation’s most dangerous cities, others have higher crime rates.”
