STORYLINE:
The Pyongyang skyline – but plunge deep underground and you’ll find there’s been a design revolution.
These commuters are descending into the newly revamped metro below the North Korean capital.
Thanks to a recent makeover the very long escalators and platforms at Yonggwang Station have a brighter appearance.
Light colours and electronic displays make it look more modern.
"Nowadays, the changes in Pyongyang can be seen not only in the new streets but also in the subway stations. The subway stations are a major convenience for people in the capital and were built in aesthetic ways, in terms of architecture, decoration and lighting, each with its theme,” says Rim So Yon, a metro station attendant working at Yonggwang Station.
The Pyongyang metro is used by Pyongyang citizens, it’s not just a showpiece. But it’s only got two lines, with sixteen stops.
The new look station brightens commuter Ho Un Jong’s day she says.
"I am often using the Moranbong subway station. Whenever I see the pictures here at the subway station, it makes me feel good.”
Moranbong station was the first to be renovated, now also Yonggwang, Kaeson, Jonu, Sungri, Kwangbok, and Ragwon have been revamped, according to the official Korean Central News Agency.
Foreign visitors used to be allowed to travel between two stops in the centre of the city.
In the five years before COVID tour operators had opened up all the stops.
However that is no longer the case as North Korea has not regularly allowed in tourists since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Foreign residents of Pyongyang have long been able to use the metro.
There’s been speculation over the years that the network might be expanded with new stations, but there’s no clear sign of that yet.
Pyongyang has recently expanded with new suburbs full of skyscrapers, but the metro system does not reach them.
