STORYLINE:
Journalists in Pakistan staged a protest in Karachi on Tuesday, denouncing the killing of journalists in Gaza by Israeli forces.

Holding banners and chanting slogans against Israel, the group called for the international community to stop Israel targeting journalists in the ongoing Hamas-Israel war.

Camera operators laid down their cameras in honour of Al Jazeera correspondents Anas al-Sharif, Mohammed Qreiqeh, camera operators Ibrahim Zaher and Mohammed Noufal and freelance cameraman Momen Aliwa and freelance journalist Mohammed al-Khalidi, who were all killed by an Israeli airstrike on Sunday.

"I think it is the biggest tally since decades and today’s protest is a protest against the killing of Al Jazeera’s young journalists and cameramen and the way Al Jazeera has been targeted by the Israeli, it’s unprecedented," said Mazhar Abbas, a former secretary of Pakistan’s Federal Union of Journalists.

Sunday’s strike killed a total of eight people, including six journalists and two other civilians, according to Shifa Hospital. Press advocates described the attack as a brazen assault on those documenting the war.

The Israeli military claimed responsibility for the strike. It came less than a year after Israeli army officials first accused correspondent Anas al-Sharif and other Al Jazeera journalists of being members of the militant groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad, an allegation that Al Jazeera and al-Sharif have previously dismissed as baseless.
