STORYLINE:
French national weather authority Meteo-France on Tuesday placed most of the country’s southern part on red alert, the highest heat warning, with temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius (109.4 Fahrenheit) expected for the second consecutive day.

“The heat will remain very intense in the southwest, increase significantly in the center-east, and spread to the northeast, including the Paris region,” Meteo-France said.

To help residents cool off, some municipalities are offering free or discounted access to public swimming pools and other recreational facilities.

The heatwave “reached exceptional levels in the southwest” on Monday, where numerous records were broken, Meteo-France noted.

Record high temperatures have reached 42.1 degrees Celsius (107.8 Fahrenheit) in the picturesque, touristic town of Bergerac, 41.4 degrees Celsius (106.5 Fahrenheit), in Cognac, home to the world’s best-known brandy and 41.6 degrees Celsius (106.9 Fahrenheit) in Bordeaux-Mérignac, France’s sixth-most populated area, and 41 degrees Celsius (105.8 Fahrenheit) in Toulouse.

In addition, most regions in central and southern France were under close monitoring by the fire department amid high risk of forest fires.

That comes after a massive, deadly blaze scorched 16,000 hectares (40,000 acres) last week in the Aude region.

Officials say the fire is under control but warn it will not be fully extinguished for weeks, with hot spots at risk of reigniting.
