All this administration does is lie and lie and lie. Crime is down. This is a power grab.”

“My thoughts on this are, number one, crime is not unknown in this area. The next block over, the 14 hundred black of T Street, has been the site of several shootings in recent years. So there are way too many shootings on the U Street area, particularly early morning on Saturday or Sunday. So… But this sort of display is not designed to, you know, stop gun violence. It’s not designed to stop the drug trade. It’s designed to intimidate people.”

I mean, you may have seen when you’ve walked around this area, a block south of here, there were signs that were put up by the city in July for a youth curfew that extended a block north and a block South of U Street. "Yeah, I mean, I’m really concerned about the increasing police presence, increased militarization of our city. It feels very unsafe, it feels very unnecessary. I’ve lived in D.C. for almost four years now and have never felt unsafe or, like, my safety was in jeopardy. But now with this increased police presence I do feel like everyone’s on edge. People are really… Yeah… Just not… like tensions are really high, people are really… The tension is palpable."

“I feel really upset at this. D.C. has always been a really great place for me, and I’ve never felt unsafe. I think it’s really upsetting to see how politicized this has become, and the militarization of D.C. I mean, that’s the basic tenet of our system is that, the military is not supposed to be used as a police force and I feel very angry that the president has chose to do that in D.C.”

“It’s concerning. I know that they’re supposed to be there for safety reasons, as it’s said, to reduce the level of crime.
