2. SOUNDBITE (English) Ryan Zito, D.C. Resident:
"My instinct? Negative. Right? Get out of the city."

3. SOUNDBITE (English) Ryan Zito, D.C. Resident:
"Crime is down. This is a power grab.”
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Elizabeth Zolper, D.C. Resident:
“A lot of the police were covering their faces, I think it’s like part of intimidation, which I was upset to see that happening right close to my home.”
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Yazima Williams, D.C. Resident:
“From where I live, I can see, like, the street. I saw, like, a group of police officers and national guards just walking. Like, they were all walking together, though, but they were walking on the side walk.”
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Marc Bernstein, D.C. Resident:
“Crime is not an unknown in this area. The next block over, the 1400 block of T Street, has been the site of several shootings in recent years."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Marc Bernstein, D.C. Resident:
“The checkpoint here is not related to any actual public safety concern."
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Tobias Hanson, D.C. Resident:
“It’s really upsetting to see how politicized this has become, and the militarization of D.C. I mean, that’s the basic tenet of our system is that, the military is not supposed to be used as a police force and I feel very angry that the president has chose to do that in D.C.”
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Yazima Williams, D.C. Resident:
“It’s concerning. I know that they’re supposed to be there for safety reasons, as it’s said, to reduce the level of crime. But I feel like it’s infringing on just the people who live here and their personal safety, whether they’re being questioned for just being in the neighborhood. I don’t think it’s fair.”

STORYLINE:
Law enforcement set up a vehicle checkpoint along the busy 14th Street Northwest corridor in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday night.
Residents in the neighborhood lined up to protest the increased police presence after the White House said the number of National Guard troops in the nation’s capital would ramp up and federal officers would be on the streets around the clock.
Less than 24 hours later, The Associated Press spoke with several residents about the increased police presence and the arrival of the National Guard.
Ryan Zito, who lives one street away from the checkpoint, went out to see what was happening. He described his emotion as “anger.”
"There’s no need for these fascist goons to be here," Zito said. "All this administration does is lie and lie and lie. Crime is down. This is a power grab.”
Elizabeth Zolper, who lives nearby, expressed concern.
“I have a lot of concerns about the influence of federal agents coming into D.C., the intimidation tactics that we’ve been seeing,” Zolper said.
Zolper said she is especially worried about the masked law enforcement agents.
“Covering your face with fabric in this day is to me not normal. It’s part of intimidation, which I was upset to see that happening right close to my home," Zolper added.
