"Unlike the Palace of Versailles, we find ourselves even closer to Paris. We are at the gates of Paris, and it’s a fairly quiet castle. We don’t have as many visitors as the Palace of Versailles. The visiting conditions are much more pleasant, and here we can closely observe the decorations, every detail in the keep. Unlike Versailles, this was the pre-Versailles, known as the Versailles of eastern Paris. It hosted the French court, especially during the reign of Louis XIV, but it is true that we have very different characteristics. This site is much older than Versailles."

It notably hosted the first kings of the Valois dynasty, and later, it became a prison that symbolized royal whims. Within this keep, we hosted very famous prisoners such as Nicolas Fouquet, the Marquis de Sade, and Denis Diderot."

"The Marquis de Sade occupied the dungeons of the Vincennes fortress in the mid to late 18th century due to his writings and actions as a libertine of the time. He was imprisoned at the request of his family since he was a very scandalous figure of his era. Originally, he was on the first floor of the dungeon, but because he did not get along well with one of his cousins, the Count of Mirabeau, the jailers punished him by moving him down to the ground floor into a much less desirable cell, subject to cold and dampness. For a few years, the Marquis de Sade was one of the last occupants of the dungeon before the prison closed in 1784."
