STORYLINE:
Thousands of mourners in Iran took to the streets on Thursday to commemorate the Shiite religious observance of Arbaeen.

Arbaeen rituals are held to mark the anniversary of the 40th day following the death of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Hussein, who became a symbol of resistance during the tumultuous first century of Islam.

Hussein’s death deepened the schism between Islam’s two main sects, Sunni and Shiite.

Volunteers in the small Iranian town, Rey offered free food, drinks and services to mourners observing the Arbaeen ritual.

Mourner Navid, who only provided his first name, sat with his son in the middle of the road and polished mourners’ shoes for free.

"We did not have the privilege of going to Iraq for the pilgrimage of Imam Hussein and the Arbaeen rally. So we decided to offer a small service for those who also could not make the journey," said 33-year-old Navid, who only provided his first name.
