“We did see an iteration from the chair that unfortunately is not acceptable for Mexico and many other delegations. Because at this stage it doesn’t have any binding measures. We don’t see global measures, we don’t see chemicals included, we don’t see anything about sustainable production.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Andreas Bjelland Eriksen, Norwegian Environment Minister:
“We were very clear on the fact that the text as it stands is not acceptable. And there are several reasons for this. The main reasons are – first, it’s not effective, because it’s not combatting all sources of plastic pollution. It doesn’t contain a full life-cycle perspective on plastic pollution.”

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Andreas Bjelland Eriksen, Norwegian Environment Minister:
“I’ll stay cautiously optimistic until the very bitter end. I think that’s my job as politician as well. I’m here to get a treaty because the world needs a treaty now. We won’t leave here with just any treaty. We need to see real concessions. But there is real progress happening, there are real talks happening as we speak.”

STORYLINE:
Negotiators working on a UN treaty to address global plastic pollution said Thursday that the current draft was “unacceptable” as it failed to effectively combat pollution.
Norwegian Environment Minister Andreas Bjelland Eriksen said the draft was “not effective, because it’s not combatting all sources of plastic pollution. It doesn’t contain a full life-cycle perspective on plastic pollution.”
Erisken said he remained “cautiously optimistic” but said he wouldn’t leave “without any treaty. We need to see real concessions."
The biggest issue of the talks has been whether the treaty should impose caps on producing new plastic or focus instead on things like better design, recycling and reuse.
Powerful oil and gas-producing nations and the plastics industry oppose production limits.
They want a treaty focused on better waste management and reuse.
The last scheduled day of the negotiations in Geneva is on Thursday.
