"What Europe or this European coalition of the willing should do is finally come up with an independent strategy and be prepared to implement it if necessary. This includes further arms deliveries to Ukraine and, so to speak, real sanctions against Russia. I mean, we are still importing. What should Putin think of Europe when European states support sanctions within the EU framework but at the same time still import gas from Russia? I mean, that’s a policy that can only be laughed at in Moscow. So, we really need to come to a unified policy and, above all, a unified strategy that we then present to the USA. It’s not against the USA, but it’s about signaling the willingness. We are prepared to continue this conflict, if necessary, on our own."

STORYLINE:
A political analyst on Thursday described a virtual meeting between European leaders, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump as a "significant success for German diplomacy."
The talks, which were convened by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, happened two days before Trump meets Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska to discuss the conflict in Ukraine.
That is "why he is willing to engage in this meeting with Trump," he said.
