STORYLINE:
Ukraine secured the release of 84 people from Russian captivity on Thursday, including both soldiers and civilians, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
“Bringing Ukrainians home, back to Ukraine. A new exchange — 84 people. These are both military and civilians. Almost all of them need medical care and significant rehabilitation,” Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram.
Among the freed civilians are people held by Russia since 2014, 2016 and 2017, he said.
Anna, whose husband was one of the 84 released Ukrainian servicemen, waited eagerly with their son Kyrylo. He spent 1207 days in captivity.
“I saw a beautiful smile, and I don’t know, it’s all a blur to be honest," she said of their reunion. "We saw him and all I could do was grab him like that, kiss him quickly.”
Eighty-four Russian servicemen were transferred in exchange, as announced by the Russian Defence Ministry.
