"It felt like hers was one of many, many, many thousands and then of course you start the research and you go, we’re in such a privileged position in life and there are so many people that it’s a daily struggle to survive or to do the thing, to have the choices that you want to make or to make good choices and to us it felt like, god, we haven’t really seen a female protagonist like that or these characters around her and I went to a women’s shelter and spent a lot of time with women there who who told me their stories and it was so unbelievable – if you put that into a movie, you almost wouldn’t believe it. And so then suddenly it felt like, oh, Lynette’s story is really representative – even though it’s extreme – of the desperation that so many people face because the system just doesn’t support them. If they’re caregiving, if they’re single mothers and they have 3 kids and they miss one week of work because one of their kids is ill and they can’t pay the rent and then the landlord chucks them out and then they don’t have a home, and that’s like a couple of days away for some people. So that’s why it felt important to try and tell it."
