STORYLINE:
Amsterdam residents were beating the heat on Wednesday by dipping into the city’s waterways.
While Parisians have recently rediscovered the pleasure of swimming in the Seine, Amsterdammers have enjoyed swimming in their in waterways for years.
On Wednesday, as Amsterdam baked in nearly 30 degree Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) weather, many chose to cool off with a swim by the docks.
"In the centre, where it’s quite busy, I see some tourists, they don’t bring their water bottles, and then I do worry a little bit for them," said Noortje, a student from The Hague. "But if you’re out here and you’re swimming , then it’s not so bad at all," she added.
In the famously egalitarian Dutch city, there are no showers, no lifeguards, and the area is free for anyone to use.
In a country dominated by waterways, canals, rivers and below-sea-level pastures, wild swimming is on the rise as climate change increases temperatures and extends the summer season.
