"I believe that Argentinians have a strong sense of cultural ownership. We are very much about what is national and well, the alfajor, beyond being from here, I think it has all the national elements, like dulce de leche, for example. It’s also quite an accessible treat. You can get it at any kiosk. It’s an inexpensive snack that we often use for a snack, for breakfast, or when you feel like having something sweet, and I think that’s why it’s so valued by regular Argentinians."

11. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Sabrina Martell, alfajor fan:
"I bought classics, but the flavors caught my attention. I saw there’s a lot of pistachio, which is really trendy. I saw there are alfajores with New York-style cookies that are really good too. And a lot of wine, a lot. They’ve added a lot of alcohol to the alfajores. Like, yes, a lot of fernet, wine, and so on."

"We are from Mendoza. We are very connected to the world of wine, and what we wanted to do was associate ourselves with that. In Mendoza, the concept of wine is something balanced, in flavor, aroma, and obviously taste and aftertaste, a well-rounded alfajor. That’s what we do. And that’s what sets us apart."

STORYLINE:
Sweet treat lovers descended on Buenos Aires on Sunday as the 4th edition of the World Alfajor Championship took place in the Argentine capital.
More than 120 producers from Argentina, Uruguay and many other countries took part in the annual competition where their creations and takes on the snack were judged by dozens of experts in blind tastings.
Organizers said the goal of the championship was to celebrate the alfajor — a sweet treat seen as part of the cultural DNA of Argentina and Uruguay — while strengthening an industry that spans from small businesses to large factories.
It aimed to highlight regional varieties including; the Mar del Plata–style alfajor, an alfajor coated in chocolate and stuffed with dulce de leche; the Cordobes, filled with fruit jam and soft cookies; the Santafesino, made of puff pastry and dulce de leche, and the Conitos, made in the shape of a cone and filled with dulce de leche and coated in chocolate.
The title of “Best Alfajor” went to Chacra Los Retamos for its walnut-flour alfajor filled with dulce de leche and covered in white chocolate.
Beyond the contest, the fair offered tastings for guests, product launches, masterclasses and a chance for traders to interact.
Since its creation in 2022, the championship has grown into one of Argentina’s largest confectionery events and inspired spinoffs in other provinces and also abroad.
