STORYLINE:
1. U.S. President Trump held a meeting at the White House with Ukrainian President Zelensky and leaders from several European countries. Does China have any information on this meeting, and what is your comment?
China has always believed that dialogue and negotiation are the only viable way to resolve the Ukraine crisis. We support all efforts conducive to peace.
2. China has just announced that Foreign Minister Wang Yi will soon visit Pakistan. Could you provide more details about the arrangements for this visit? What are China’s expectations? (Questions 2 and 3 are the same)
This will be Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s first visit to Pakistan in three years, and another high-level interaction between China and Pakistan in recent times. During the visit, Foreign Minister Wang Yi will meet with Pakistani leaders and hold the sixth China-Pakistan Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, engaging in in-depth communication on bilateral relations and international and regional issues of mutual concern.
3. Through this visit, China looks forward to working with Pakistan to further implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of both countries, deepen strategic communication, expand pragmatic cooperation across various fields, strengthen coordination in international and regional affairs, and accelerate the building of a closer China-Pakistan community with a shared future in the new era.
4. We have noted new developments in the Ukraine crisis recently. In light of the current situation, what is China’s position on the Ukraine crisis? How does China view the prospects for resolving the crisis? What kind of peace agreement does China hope to see?
China’s position on the Ukraine crisis is consistent and clear. China is not the creator of the crisis, nor a party to it. But from the very first day of the crisis, China has maintained an objective and impartial stance and has consistently promoted peace talks. President Xi Jinping proposed the “Four Shoulds”: the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries should be respected, the purposes and principles of the UN Charter should be upheld, the legitimate security concerns of all countries should be taken seriously, and all efforts conducive to a peaceful resolution of the crisis should be supported. These principles are of even greater practical significance under the current circumstances.
We have also released China’s position paper, dispatched special envoys for multiple rounds of shuttle diplomacy, and initiated the establishment of a Friends of Peace group on the Ukraine crisis at the United Nations, voicing objective, impartial, and peace-promoting views. China is willing to continue playing a constructive role in the political resolution of the crisis in accordance with the wishes of the parties involved and in cooperation with the international community.
5. Some media reports suggested President Putin and President Zelenskyy might soon meet within two weeks. Since Putin will be in China for commemorations for the war victory early next month, is there any possibility that they will meet in China?
I don’t answer hypothetical questions.
I have just made clear China’s position. We have always believed that dialogue and negotiation are the only viable way to resolve the Ukraine crisis, and we support all efforts conducive to peace.
