STORYLINE:
The Kiruna Church and its belfry are being moved along a 5-kilometer route east to a new city center in northern Sweden as part of the town’s relocation.
The church is being moved because the world’s largest underground iron-ore mine is threatening to swallow the town.
This week, thousands of visitors have descended upon Kiruna, a municipality with a population of roughly 23,000 people who live some 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle.
The church’s vicar blessed the church before the move on Tuesday morning. Its journey is scheduled to end Wednesday afternoon.
