STORYLINE:
Microphones picked up conversations that U.S. President Donald Trump and European leaders had as they gathered for talks at the White House.
Standing around the table before the start of the roundtable meeting in Washington, Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron were heard speaking about possible trilateral talks involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
After some pleasantries between Trump and Macron while standing around the East Room of the White House, Trump told Macron "I think he wants to make a deal," referring to Putin.
"I think he wants to make a deal for me. Do you understand that? As crazy as it sounds. Just, sit down. Sit down, everybody. I think we’ll let the press come in for a minute," Trump said, possibly not realizing the microphones in the room.
Separately, as Trump was dismissing the gathered press when Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, seated next to Trump, leaned over to thank him and laughed, saying “I never want to speak with my press.”
