STORYLINE:
Hundreds of historic ships began to sail for Amsterdam on Wednesday for a five-day festival celebrating the Dutch capital’s maritime past.
Vessels from all over the world left the North Sea coastal town of IJmuiden to begin their hours-long journey up the IJ waterway.
Crowds lined the banks of the IJ, and hundreds of smaller vessels packed the waterways, to watch the ships pass.
Upon arrival in Amsterdam, each tall ship will be greeted with two cannon shots and its country’s national anthem as it enters the harbour.
This year’s SAIL 2025 is the first edition of the colourful and very popular festival in a decade.
The event, which draws hundreds of thousands of visitors, is held every five years, but the 2020 edition was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The first event was first held in 1975 to celebrate Amsterdam’s 700th anniversary and this year’s edition coincides with the capital’s 750th birthday.
