STORYLINE:
Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul visited Indonesia and met Foreign Minister Sugiono on Wednesday in Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta.
Sugiono, who like many Indonesians uses a single name, told a joint news conference with Wadephul that the two countries share the view and discussed how to overcome geopolitical challenges and rising trade barriers.
Their meeting took place on the second leg of Wadephul’s five-day trip to Japan and Indonesia, which Wadephul has said are German’s key partners for economic relations that build on free trade, competition and fairness.
The talks came almost two weeks after U.S. President Donald Trump began imposing higher import taxes on dozens of countries on Thursday, including a 19% rate on Indonesia. The European Union, including German, became subject to tariff rates of 10%.
The two ministers also discussed their countries’ economic relationship and the South China Sea.
