"It’s emotion because there is empathy, because there is listening, because they listened to the people, because they listened to those of us who sometimes cannot raise our voices. That’s what moves me, that we are here today, teachers, families, kids, everyone is here for this, and it’s an overwhelming emotion. Colleagues who are mothers of people with disabilities and to support them in this process: how could I not be moved?"

"Being in the uncertainty of not knowing what was going to happen. Whether she (her 8-year-old daughter Nayla) would be left without therapy, without school, without transportation, it caused us a lot of anxiety. It’s hard for us to get a medical appointment. It’s hard for us to get authorization (for medicine or therapies). It’s hard for us to get everything for them. And now this gives me a lot of hope knowing that my daughter will be able to fulfill her dreams, that she will be able to have what she deserves."

STORYLINE:
In a clear challenge to Argentine President Javier Milei’s fiscal policy, the opposition in Congress has taken the first step to overturn the president’s veto of an emergency disability law that improves benefits for this vulnerable group of the population.
With 172 votes in favor, 73 against, and two abstentions, the Chamber of Deputies rejected the presidential veto on Wednesday and referred the matter to the Senate, which will have the final say.
The vote once again highlighted the fragility of the governing party, La Libertad Avanza, in parliament—it controls neither of the two chambers—and dealt a major blow to Milei’s "there is no money" motto.
The dispute is occurring as part of the campaign for the legislative elections on October 26.
Anticipating the adverse result, presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni announced earlier on the social network X that the government was evaluating granting an increase in disability benefits using savings obtained from the reduction of improperly granted disability pensions.
The law, approved by the Senate on June 10, declared a Disability Emergency throughout the national territory until December 31, 2027.
Furthermore, it establishes a non-contributory disability pension equivalent to 70% of the minimum retirement pension.
