3. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Mao Ning, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“Recently, New Zealand’s intelligence and security agencies have repeatedly spread rumors, groundlessly slandered and attacked China, and smeared normal friendly exchanges between China and various sectors in New Zealand. They have harassed and intimidated overseas Chinese in New Zealand, reflecting ideological bias and Cold War mentality within relevant New Zealand agencies. This is detrimental to mutual trust and runs counter to the consensus between the two countries to enhance cultural and people-to-people exchanges. China is strongly dissatisfied and firmly opposed this, and we urge relevant New Zealand departments to stop spreading lies and creating discord, and to do more to promote the sound and stable development of China-New Zealand relations.”

5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Mao Ning, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“China is surprised by the so-called clarification from the Indian side. In fact, during the meeting, Foreign Minister Jaishankar stated that India has always adhered to the one-China policy and that Taiwan is a part of China. It appears that certain individuals within India are attempting to undermine China’s sovereignty on the Taiwan issue and disrupt the improvement of China-India relations. China expresses serious concern and firm opposition to this.”

STORYLINE:
China on Thursday rejected a report by New Zealand’s Security Intelligence Service that labeled Beijing as the “most active” actor engaged in foreign interference in the country.
Earlier in the day, New Zealand’s spy service released its annual risk assessment, warning that the country faces the "most challenging national security environment of recent times" as multiple countries seek to manipulate its government and society.
At a press briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning denounced the criticisms, saying New Zealand has “groundlessly slandered and attacked China, and smeared normal friendly exchanges” between the two countries.
Mao warned that such accusations undermine mutual trust and run counter to both countries’ commitment to strengthen cultural and people-to-people ties, urging New Zealand authorities to “stop spreading lies and creating discord.”
Mao also addressed a controversy over India’s stance on Taiwan, saying China was “surprised” by New Delhi’s clarification on remarks attributed to Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
China’s official readout of his meeting with Foreign Minister Wang Yi quoted Jaishankar as affirming that “Taiwan is part of China.”
