STORYLINE:
Admiral Alvin Holsey, commander of the United States Southern Command, was honored by the Paraguayan government on Saturday for his contributions to the country’s security and defense.
Admiral Holsey was awarded a decoration by President Santiago Peña in a ceremony at the Government Palace in Asuncion.
President Peña praised the Southern Command as a "strategic ally" for Paraguay, citing its decisive support in defense, humanitarian assistance, and training.
In his remarks, Admiral Holsey highlighted key initiatives, including the Riverine Security Resilience Program, which focuses on developing capabilities for interventions in waterways.
He also mentioned the establishment of a cybersecurity operations center and efforts to enhance "soft capabilities" to combat transnational criminal organizations.
The ceremony follows the signing of a "Safe Third Country Agreement" between the U.S. and Paraguay on August 14.
This agreement allows the U.S. to send asylum seekers to Paraguay to pursue their protection claims there.
Opposition Senators of Paraguay criticized the agreement, demanding to know the details.
