"We have a federal prosecutor’s office that attributes involvement in an extremely dangerous organization (Sinaloa cartel) based on anecdotes of camaraderie. There is not a single instance where we have seen—at least the prosecutor did not show us, did not reveal to us—where we have seen that he participated, was part of a group, was subordinate, or any of the predicates required by the special federal law."

"Today, he will be immediately released, as ordered by the judge, because the prosecution did not justify the need for him to remain in custody during the process. However, very strict measures have been imposed on him, which he and his defence will strictly adhere to. We will ensure that this is the case."

STORYLINE:
Mexican boxer Julio César Chávez Junior will face trial on accusations of having cartel ties under probation, a Mexican judge said on Saturday.
But the boxer’s lawyer said he could await the trial outside of detention.
After a court hearing in the northern Mexican city of Hermosillo, Chavez Junior’s lawyer, Rubén Fernando Benítez Alvarez, said the court announced additional measures and granted three months of additional investigation into the case.
The fighter, who had been living in the United States for several years, was arrested on July 2 by federal agents outside his Los Angeles home for overstaying his visa and lying on an application to obtain a green card.
The arrest came just days after a fight he had with famed American boxer Jake Paul in Los Angeles.
Since 2019, Mexican prosecutors have been investigating the 39-year-old boxer following a complaint filed by American authorities against the Sinaloa Cartel for organized crime, human trafficking, arms trafficking, and drug trafficking.
Mexico’s president said César Chávez Jr. had been wanted since 2023 in Mexico on organized crime charges, but that he wasn’t detained because he spent most of the time in the U.S.
The high profile case has drawn eyes at a time when the Trump administration is pressuring Mexico to crack down on organized crime, cancelling visas of notable Mexican artists and celebrities and ramped up deportations.
The life of the son of the famous Julio César Chávez, one of the most popular and successful Mexican boxers in history, has been marked by scandals throughout a boxing career lived in his father’s shadow.
