“There is one thing I can say: that is Israel has an obligation to comply with the agreement brokered by the Americans and the French (on) November 27 of last year. This agreement is clear, it’s about the cessation of hostilities. Israel ought to respect the cessation of hostilities, which has not yet happened. All the more, this is essential as the American envoy, (Tom) Barrack, suggested that we look into a series of objectives that are meant to consolidate and reaffirm the cessation of hostilities and we’ve agreed to those objectives, provided Israel commits itself to the cessation of hostilities."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Tarek Mitri, Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister:
“Lebanon’s position is clear; Israel has to commit itself to the cessation of hostilities. Once this has happened then we start implementing the agreement of November 27th, and the series of objectives that were mentioned in Barrack’s paper. And those series of objectives refer to withdrawal from the five hills that Israel controls, they refer to the return of prisoners in Israeli hands, and everything else. But the starting point is the cessation of hostilities."

STORYLINE:
Lebanon’s Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri on Monday called on Israel to adhere to a ceasefire agreement brokered by the United States and France last November, saying the deal remains unfulfilled.
“The agreement is clear — it concerns the cessation of hostilities. Israel should respect this ceasefire, which has not yet happened," Mitri said in an interview with the Associated Press in Beirut.
Mitri emphasized that Lebanon has accepted a series of objectives proposed by U.S. envoy Tom Barrack, aimed at reinforcing the ceasefire, but stressed that implementation hinges on Israel’s commitment to halting military operations.
These objectives include Israel’s withdrawal from five hills it controls inside Lebanon and halting of airstrikes that have killed or wounded hundreds of people, most of them Hezbollah members.
Meanwhile Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israeli forces could start withdrawing from territory they hold in southern Lebanon after the Lebanese cabinet’s “momentous decision” earlier this month to work towards the disarmament of the militant group Hezbollah by the end of 2025.
Netanyahu said Monday that if Lebanon takes the necessary steps to disarm Hezbollah, then Israel will respond with reciprocal measures, including a phased reduction of the Israeli military presence in southern Lebanon.
