"This loan is an establishing amount to start a fund – a fund for the reconstruction of infrastructure in the areas affected (by the latest Israel-Hezbollah war). We hope this fund will reach $1 billion."

"The World Bank loan will finance the initial phase of LEAP (Lebanese Emergency Assistance Project). "This is the beginning of a process in which Lebanon can regain trust of the international community. So the World Bank has agreed to start, with the government of Lebanon and the Council for Development and Reconstruction, the implementation of a loan of $250 million. If this is going well, then it may pave the road for the country to regain the trust of the other partners. But that is a process, and the proof is in the pudding. We will see whether or not things are going well. But we have put everything in place, so that it goes well.”

STORYLINE:
Lebanon signed a $250 million loan agreement with the World Bank on Tuesday to support urgent repairs and the reconstruction of damaged critical public infrastructure and lifeline services following the 14-month Israel-Hezbollah war.

The director of the World Bank’s Middle East division, Jean-Christophe Carret and Lebanese Finance Minister Yassine Jaber signed the deal in Beirut in the presence of the ministers of public works, energy and economy.

At a joint news conference at the Ministry of Finance, Jaber said the loan "is an establishing amount to start a fund for the reconstruction of infrastructure in the areas affected" by he war.
