“As a lawmaker the diplomatic protection that I have is useful to this mission, this is one of the reasons I believe it is important for me to be in it, so that I can use this status for the protection of the mission and to break the siege and help the boats reach Gaza.”

“The more members of the European Parliament and other lawmakers from various countries are on these boats, the more difficult it will be for the state and the Israeli government to counterattack or to block these humanitarian boats.”

“Israel is preventing humanitarian aid that is crucial for the survival of the people of Gaza to arrive where it is most needed. Israel is blocking food from arriving to children starving in Gaza, to break this humanitarian siege is not only legal from an international law point of view, it is an ethical and moral imperative.”

STORYLINE:
A Portuguese lawmaker said on Tuesday she will join activists in an upcoming aid flotilla bound for the Gaza Strip.

Mariana Mortágua, 39, the leader of the Left Bloc party, will be joined by two other Portuguese participants.

The Global Sumud Flotilla is expected to depart from Barcelona’s port next Sunday, en route to Gaza with humanitarian aid.

Mortágua said she believed her diplomatic protection by virtue of being a lawmaker will be "useful" to the flotilla.

Dozens of boats are expected to take part, with participants from more than 40 countries.

Swedish activist Greta Thunberg is also expected to join, having been part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition crew which was intercepted and detained by the Israeli military in June.

Amid Israel’s ongoing offensive, the world’s leading authority on food crises has declared parts of Gaza are experiencing famine, saying it was likely to spread across the territory without a ceasefire and an end to restrictions on humanitarian aid.
