3. SOUNDBITE (English) Patricia Sylvester, Maine resident:
“So my feeling is that it’s an occupation, and that it is not about crime. I’ve seen a lot of National Guard here knowing that they started being able to carry handguns, and then Trump’s executive order, just I think yesterday allowing Pete Hegseth to create specially trained units so they can walk the streets as law enforcement. So, I think that this is a, I think it’s power move.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Dan Gehrke, Wisconsin resident:
“My wife and I were here three years ago, and it’s actually nice. It’s welcome. I think that it doesn’t make us feel any more unsafe. Or, I think it makes us feel much safer, and I appreciate the presence that’s around.”
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Patricia Sylvester, Maine resident:
“I’ve said to them, because I talked to the National Guard, I’ve said this doesn’t make me feel safer.”
7. Various of armed National Guard members walking around the Washington Monument

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Dan Gehrke, Wisconsin resident:
“I think it needs the attention that it’s been given, yeah. I mean, you can see different cities all over the United States that are having problems. And I mean just from the things we’ve been hearing even around town today and from other people that have been here, the presence is welcome. And I think that anything that we can do to make the cities of the United State safer is better.”

STORYLINE:
Some National Guard units patrolling the nation’s capital at the direction of President Donald Trump have started carrying firearms.
That’s an escalation of his military deployment that makes good on a directive issued late last week by his defense secretary.
Tourists visiting the National Mall responded to the unique sight.
Patricia Sylvester, a resident of Maine, said she thinks it’s a power move.
“I’ve said to them, because I talked to the National Guard, I’ve said this doesn’t make me feel safer.”
Dan Gehrke, visiting from Wisconsin with his family, disagrees with Sylvester’s assessment.
“Just from the things we’ve been hearing even around town today and from other people that have been here, the presence is welcome. And I think that anything that we can do to make the cities of the United State safer is better,” Gehrke said.
