STORYLINE:
A U.S. delegation including senators and envoy’s to the Middle East met Tuesday with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and the country’s parliament speaker in Beirut.
The talks took place as Tom Barrack, U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoy to the Middle East, was continuing a series of high-level discussions aimed at bolstering regional stability and supporting Lebanon’s post-conflict recovery.
The talks focused on U.S.-backed proposals for disarmament of Hezbollah, economic reconstruction, and long-term peace in the region.
Barrack was joined by Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham in the meetings on Tuesday.
They held separate meetings with Salam at the government headquarters in Beirut and Parliament Speaker, Nabih Berri, in his office.
The visit comes amid heightened tensions following Lebanon’s endorsement of a U.S.-backed plan for Hezbollah to disarm, a move that has drawn criticism from the Iran-backed group and its allies.
Barrack also met earlier with President Joseph Aoun, who handed him a draft memo outlining Lebanon’s commitments under recent agreements and declarations.
The U.S. envoy said Washington is working on an economic proposal to support Lebanon’s reconstruction efforts following last year’s ceasefire with Israel.
