STORYLINE:
China called on the U.S. to follow through on President Donald Trump’s statement that he welcomed more Chinese students to study in the U.S.

Addressing reporters’ questions during a meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung in the Oval Office on Monday, Trump said he is going to allow up to 600,000 Chinese students to come to the U.S.

At a daily news briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stressed the importance of educational exchanges in enhancing mutual understanding between countries, calling on the U.S. to “stop unwarranted harassment” of the Chinese students.

After decades of growth, the number of Chinese students in the U.S. peaked at 372,532 in the 2019-2020 academic year, just as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold.

The number slipped to 289,526 in 2022 and further dipped to 277,398 in 2023.

In the past year, several U.S. universities, including the University of Michigan, have ended their joint partnerships with Chinese universities after Republicans raised concerns that U.S. dollars have contributed to China’s tech advancement and military modernization.

“China and the U.S. are not on the same level in terms of nuclear capabilities, and the two countries differ significantly in nuclear policies and strategic security environments. It is neither reasonable nor realistic to ask China to join trilateral nuclear disarmament negotiations with the U.S. and Russia.”

Guo also rejected Trump’s call for China to join nuclear disarmament talks with the U.S. and Russia, arguing that Beijing’s nuclear capabilities are not “on the same level” as Washington’s and that the two countries differ significantly in their nuclear policies and security environments.

“It is neither reasonable nor realistic to ask China to join trilateral nuclear disarmament negotiations with the U.S. and Russia,” said Guo.

Trump made the remarks as he sought to restart stalled negotiations with North Korea.

Guo also responded to a statement by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, who signaled Seoul’s intention to reduce reliance on Washington for security and on China for the economy.
