"What we want is, local control of our public safety ecosystem. And that includes deployment of officers. And we want federal officers that work in coordination with us. DEA, ATF, FBI, who, as the chief just mentioned, work with us on major crime issues all the time. And our officers are familiar with working with them, and they have been helpful in the field."
Reporter off camera: "So do you think this is going to end after 30 days?"
Bowser: "I think we’re going to have officers, and we want officers. We want to enhance our officer presence."

"Well, the federal government owns Union Station. And I think that I don’t know the details of what will happen. If it is just about management, that I would consider that step one. If it’s about what Union Station needs for its total transformation, that would be an amazing, initiative for the federal government to take on, I have had a very early conversation when, I visited the president during his most recent transition, about Union Station and how that could represent a very significant and good investment for this region."

STORYLINE:
DC Mayor Muriel Bowser said the federal surge has helped in fewer gun crimes, fewer homicides and led to an extreme reduction in carjackings.
But the surge has led to a “break in trust between, police and community, especially with new federal partners.”
Bowser said “we know having masked ICE agents in the community has not worked. And National Guard from other states has not been an efficient use of those resources.”
In recent weeks, the president has increased federal law enforcement and immigration agents in the nation’s capital while also taking over the city’s police department and activating members of the National Guard, saying he’s fighting violent crime.
Local police department statistics, though, show violent crime in Washington has declined in recent years.
This also comes as President Donald Trump’s administration is taking control of Washington’s Union Station from Amtrak, marking another federal intervention in the nation’s capital.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced the move Wednesday during the launch of the NextGen Acela high-speed train. Duffy says Union Station has "fallen into disrepair" when it should be a "point of pride" for the city, where Trump’s Republican administration has increased federal law enforcement and immigration agents.
Duffy echoes Trump’s call for $2 billion from Congress to beautify Washington as part of his crackdown on the city.
National Guard troops have been patrolling Union Station, which is walking distance from the U.S. Capitol.
Duffy says Trump wants Union Station to be beautiful again.
