“At 4 o’clock in the morning the rockets began to whistle above us. That’s when you understand that you need to go to a shelter. At the moment we left the house the siren was screaming above my head. At this point you feel horrific primal fear that pierces your body with needles. You just don’t know what to do. First of all, it’s scary enough to listen to the sound of a siren from your home, so when we got out on the street it feels like something is already flying above your head. The next moment the rocket whistled above us and felt an instant hit. Seems like it hit right here.”

“And that’s when we ran to the shelter. Of course, you’re sitting in the shelter, but it’s still the same, even though it’s underground, and you hear whistling, explosions. And it gets even scarier when all the people around you start to sit down like that, cover their eyes, cover their ears. And this additionally creates total chaos, noise and fear.”

“The number of victims will increase, as we have reports of at least seven people missing in this building. The rocket hit between the third and fourth floors. Among the dead is a 14-year-old child, and an 11-year-old child is in critical condition and is currently in the hospital. Approximately 40 people have been injured in the city of Kyiv.”

“A demonstrative terrorist attack to highlight that they have been and will continue to target our critical and residential infrastructure. I don’t think anyone wants peace in the Russian Federation, and this is a challenge even to our international partners, because today’s attack, which was complex and involved UAVs and missiles, proves only one thing: that Russia is following its own path, the path of terrorism. They continue to try not only to destroy infrastructure, but also to intimidate our people in order to make us panic and feel uncertain.”

STORYLINE:
Residents of Ukraine’s capital described on Thursday the horrors and panic they faced during a mass Russian drone and missile attack.
Natalya Ponomarenko, a local resident, said she experienced a "horrific primal fear" that made her feel her body was being pierced by needles.
When she headed to the shelter, the panic only became worse as she saw others covering their eyes and ears while the strikes continued.
A mass Russian drone and missile attack on Ukraine’s capital, including a rare strike in the center of the city, early Thursday killed at least 10 people and wounded 48, local authorities said.
It was the first major Russian combined attack on Kyiv in weeks as U.S.-led peace efforts to end the three-year war struggled to gain traction.
The numbers are expected to rise.
