God forbid that they don’t hear the blows that we hear. God forbid that America never hears our children suffering and dying, and that this scoundrel (Putin) gets it all back."

STORYLINE:
Residents gathered outside a Kyiv residential building on Friday to commemorate the 22 people who died there, including four children, according to the State Emergency Service, in Russia’s latest air assault on the Ukrainian capital.

"Today at 9:40 (local time), emergency search and rescue operations at this building were completed," said the State Emergency Service’s head of communications, Svitlana Vodolaha, confirming the number of victims.

37-year-old Iryna Drebizhova lives nearby and came with her family to pay tribute to those killed in the attack, as an impromptu memorial sprung up with flowers and children’s soft toys.

"We heard sounds, explosions, rockets, Shaheds were flying all over Kyiv until three in the morning," she said of Wednesday into Thursday night.

"We didn’t have time to get up when there was a blow, a very strong blow, then another blow, and another blow, and another blow. Then it was quiet and after 10 minutes very strong blows began again," she said.

Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia launched 598 strike drones and decoys and 31 missiles of different types across the country early Thursday, most of them striking targets in Kyiv.

At least 33 locations across all 10 of the city’s districts were directly hit or damaged by debris, officials said.

The attack was one of the few times Russian drones and missiles have penetrated the heart of Kyiv since the start of the full-scale invasion.

European defense ministers pledged Friday to ramp up support for Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia, a day after the air assault that killed at least 23 people overall and badly damaged a European diplomatic compound.

Outrage over the attack propelled Europe’s leaders to condemn Russia even before Friday’s meeting and call for tougher measures on Moscow like seizing frozen assets, further sanctions and increasing support for Ukraine’s military and membership in the European Union.
