STORYLINE:
The leaders of Japan and India joined a Tokyo business forum on Friday, calling for the strengthening of economic ties.

Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba vowed to support the industrial sector as the "driving force" to realise the great potential for development.

“In an increasingly uncertain global economy, building reliable partners and resilient supply chains is essential for ensuring economic security and achieving further economic development," said Ishiba.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived in Tokyo earlier on Friday for a two-day visit, said that his country is the fastest growing major economy and its reform efforts now provide better transparency and predictability for business partners.

His trip to Japan comes on the heels of his trip to Beijing, where he and China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi hailed improving relations between the two sides following yearslong disputes over their Himalayan borders.

Ishiba said numerous business agreements were signed at the forum, hosted by Japan’s powerful business lobby Keidanren.

“There is great potential for development between us," he said.

"Needless to say, the driving force to turn this potential into reality is all of you in the industrial sector. Together with the Indian government, we, the Japanese government, will continue to steadily support these efforts," added Ishiba.

Later Friday, the two leaders will hold talks and are expected to release a “joint vision” for the development of their cooperation over the next decade.

India’s skilled, young workforce is seen as an answer to Japan’s aging and declining population.

The two leaders are expected to agree on a goal of boosting Japanese private-sector investment in India to 10 trillion yen ($68 billion) over the next decade and on increasing human resources exchanges to half a million people in the coming five years.

Modi and Ishiba are also expected to reaffirm their cooperation as part of the Quad framework of regional leaders that also include the United States and Australia.
