STORYLINE:
Activists set to embark on an aid flotilla to Gaza stressed the need on Sunday for more food to enter the enclave.
"That is why we are mobilizing people from all over the world, coming back even stronger with dozens of boats, because there is simply no alternative," Swedish activist, Greta Thunberg, told reporters ahead of the journey set to leave Barcelona.
Thunberg was onboard the boat Madleen, another aid flotilla operated by activist group Freedom Flotilla Coalition, which departed from southern Italy in early June.
The flotilla was stopped and its passengers all detained by Israeli forces a few days after setting sail towards Gaza.
"The question here today is not why we are sailing," Thunberg added.
"The story here is how people are being deliberately deprived of the very basic means to survive."
Dozens of boats are expected to join the flotilla from Barcelona and other European ports in the coming days.
"Today we show that we are going back," said Yasemin Acar, another activist who was also on board the Madleen and detained by Israeli forces in early June.
"With more countries joining us from around the world, we are 44 delegations, and we are even more people from around the world joining this mission. We had 30,000 people signing up to be on this mission," she said.
The activists are sailing to protest Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, which is among the deadliest and most destructive since World War II, and its blockade on the entry of humanitarian aid.
The blockade has led to a widespread risk of famine in the Gaza Strip.
