"Today is a very special day for us, because we have been preparing for the meeting with our children all summer. Earlier in peaceful times we said that if there is a bell ringing in the school, then there is peace in the world. And today we have such calls that there is this war. But childhood cannot be repeated. And today, we gather our children to school. Today we put them in new classes. We are doing all the new projects today, so that school would be interesting for them, so that their childhood would be bright. So that they don’t feel the brunt of the war as much. Even in our bomb shelters, we provide the children with the most interesting educational and cognitive programs. They don’t waste time, even there. We work on this. And what do we see in our children? First of all, we want them to live in a peaceful country."

"Young fighters, I think, have improved. Even some results exceed the standards of the international standards. They train for six hours a week. During the summer break, I know that my guys were busy, running, going to the gym and always doing their physical training."

"For me, it is a new opportunity to start this school year and the last school year in this lyceum (institutions of secondary education providing specialized education). After that, I will join the Ukrainian army, defend my country, and demonstrate my abilities there."

STORYLINE:
Students and teachers in Kyiv’s Cadet Lyceum welcomed on Monday the start of a new school year under the shadow of Russia’s invasion.
A parade was held at the Cadet Lyceum No. 23 with the participation of classes of different ages.
They marched, sang songs and danced in the parade, as well as demonstrated their training.
"I will join the Ukrainian army, defend my country, and demonstrate my abilities there," one student told the Associated Press, reflecting on the start of the new academic year.
Cadet Lyceum No. 23 is located in the Shevchenkivskyi district of Kyiv and has 28 classes with more than 700 children enrolled.
The school program includes enhanced military and physical training for students.
