4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Muhammad Ibrahim, retired government worker:
"I came in 2010 and bought the house with the hard-earned life’s work. I have absolutely no connection to those who were before me. I just wanted a place to live in. I bought this house and lived in it. And as you can see, the metal roof boards are all worn down. If you hit the walls, they break. The doors are in the same condition. It’s housing for the most basic level of living."

"They said, ‘prepare for the next day.’ They said on Thursday an inspection committee would come to check whoever has a court ruling or documents proving ownership, those people would not be evicted. We had our papers ready, so we thought, that’s it, no one would bother us. It’s an inspection committee. The next day I went to work, my husband called me saying they came in, beat him up and beat up my son, and they didn’t even ask for papers. They didn’t ask us for our official papers. But at the house next to us, they did, and they ripped them up. My sister’s papers, they asked for them and they took the paperwork with the court ruling. And then they kept telling everyone: ‘You have 48 hours. Otherwise we’ll demolish the houses over your heads.’"

"It doesn’t matter anymore. Honestly, it just doesn’t matter anymore. Nothing matters in this world. Let them kill us, we’ll be relieved."

"The (security) committee that we had expected to come in wasn’t the same as the one (that showed up). The people who came were completely different, with no real understanding of the situation whatsoever."

"There were other violations in the form of beatings, insults, arrests and verbal abuse. All those problems happened. Some of the young men got carried away, they beat the women. There were a lot of violations."
