STORYLINE:
Heavy rains continued to lash several parts of northern India, killing at least 10 people over the past 24 hours and forcing authorities to close some schools and offices on Tuesday.
In New Delhi, water levels of the Yamuna River, which originates in the Himalayas, crossed the "danger mark" authorities said, posing a threat of flooding in low-lying areas of the city.
The rains also led to flooding in parts of Gurugram city on the outskirts of New Delhi, waterlogging roads and apartments and triggering severe traffic disruptions.
Rain-related incidents in India’s Punjab, home to more than 30 million people, have killed at least 29 people in August and caused damage to crops and livestock, authorities said.
Rescue teams, backed by the army and disaster response services, were evacuating thousands of people from flood-hit homes, officials said.
The India Meteorological Department warned of more heavy rain in the region until Wednesday.
