4. SOUNDBITE (English) Rev Manuel Dorantes, Director of the Laudato Sì center:
“What this is, Borgo Laudato Si, aims to be a tangible model of what the church teaches in her social doctrine about who God is and who we are and what we should do regarding nature and creation. And so it’s the connection between the three and what the Church calls integral ecology. Not as a theory, but as a practical model. What would it look like if we actually lived the very things that we teach? And so having the luxury of all this space that has been closed off to the public for 400 years, Pope Francis decided to take this and invest the resources of the church into creating this practical model, inviting people who are Catholic and non-Catholic to be able to create this model together and give the world a sign of hope that the world can be different if we choose to work together to live the things that we preach.”

“It is intended to be a model for an economy that creates, that generates in all ways because sometimes ”waste” can also be waste of people because perhaps they are being exploited in their work. Instead, this is a model of economy where people are valued and nothing is rejected. Everything that is produced has its revenues and also has profits. Profits that must be shared. The circular model here is also due to the fact that there are different types of production companies, but there is also the production of electricity, there is a waste collection and treatment system and everything interacts. So what is produced in the fields such as agriculture can be used in catering and the waste is used as fertilizer for agriculture. Young people who train to work here are trained in various activities and then they can become workers and then be employed in the production system."

14. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Sister Alessandra Smerilli, member of the board of the Laudatory Si center:
“First of all, this place wants to be a place that the Catholic Church and the Vatican offers to everyone, truly to everyone. The ”care of our common home” is intended to be the home for everyone. For Catholics, the meaning and foundation is Laudato Si’. And clearly the relationship with God that created us, with others, with ourselves and therefore respect for our common home and the responsibility we have to care for it."
