STORYLINE:
China’s leader Xi Jinping welcomed Russia’s President Vladimir Putin to Beijing on Tuesday, calling him an “old friend” as they began a series of meetings.
Relations between China and Russia have deepened in recent years, particularly after Russia’s so-called military operation in Ukraine in early 2022.
"China and Russia have remained true to their original aspirations and stayed the course, achieving fruitful cooperation across various fields,” Xi told Putin during their bilateral meeting.
The talks in Beijing come the day the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit and the day before a Chinese military parade to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
China has provided an economic lifeline to Russia by continuing trade despite western sanctions and some of its companies have been accused of abetting the military industry.
