The Central Mediterranean is one of the world’s deadliest migration routes, yet over 40,000 people have used it to reach Italy this year alone. With around 400 deaths and more than 300 missing since January 2025, rescue groups say the EU’s withdrawal from sea rescues has created a humanitarian crisis. For many fleeing countries like Libya, the dangerous journey still feels safer than the life they left behind.
