STORYLINE

Mothers of some of the hundreds of women murdered in Mexico, near the border with the US, on Tuesday marched through the streets of the capital to demand a proper, independent investigation into the killings.

Joined by human rights workers and other supporters, they marched from the "Angel of Independence" to President Vincente Fox’s official residence, where they held talks with the Mexican leader.

At least 263 women have been killed in Ciudad Juarez since 1993 and more than four and a half thousand have been reported missing, according to an official report which was presented to Mexico’s Congress and to President Vicente Fox earlier this week.

It complained that officials had used falsified evidence, torture and questionable investigative techniques in probing the cases, echoing criticisms made in August by the independent group Amnesty International.

Tuesday’s meeting was first formal talks between a Mexican president and mothers of the women killed in the decade-long string of murders in Ciudad Juarez and marked what some called a high point in the women’s fight for justice.

But while the women’s cause has gained enormous international attention, prosecutors appear to be no closer to solving the killings.

Federal prosecutors have taken over the investigation of about a dozen of the cases and in October, Fox appointed a special commissioner to oversee the probe.

But local prosecutors in northern Chihuahua state, where Juarez is located, have done so badly on the case that the mothers’ main demand to Fox was for the prosecution and punishment of law enforcement officials who allegedly mishandled the cases and tampered with evidence.

The mothers also asked Fox to provide more agents and funding for the investigation and for anti-crime programmes in Chihuahua and asked for government monetary support for the victims’ families.
