“(We) went to Pakistan due to unemployment and poverty, we spent six years there, but about six months ago, the Pakistani police forcibly deported us, and when we came back here to finish building this house with great difficulties, suddenly this earthquake struck and destroyed everything.”

“We are living in a poor condition, there is no clean drinking water, the pipes and the water tank are broken. There is a severe shortage of water, there is no place to take shelter when it rains, we just sit under a tarp.”

STORYLINE:
Hundreds more bodies have been recovered from houses in mountain villages destroyed by a major earthquake in Afghanistan early this week, pushing the death toll to over 2,200, a Taliban government spokesman said on Thursday.
Farmer Ghulam Haider returned to his house and found his property in ruins after the shallow, 6.0-magnitude quake struck late Sunday.
Haider and his family left Pakistan after six years, and returned to the Kunar district in Afghanistan.
“About six months ago, the Pakistani police forcibly deported us, and when we came back here to finish building this house with great difficulties, suddenly this earthquake struck and destroyed everything,” he said.
On the night of the quake, Haider was sleeping in the courtyard while his family rested inside.
His son and daughter-in-law managed to crawl out from the debris with their two injured sons.
But, their daughter did not survive.
Most of the casualties have been in Kunar province, where people typically live in wood and mud-brick houses along steep river valleys separated by high mountains.
Some 98% percent of the buildings in the province were damaged or destroyed, according to an assessment issued on Thursday by the Islamic Relief charity.
Aid agencies said they were sorely in need of staff and supplies to tend to the region’s survivors.
Roofs have caved in the village of Masood Killi in Afghanistan’s eastern Kunar province.
Walls have been reduced to stone and dust, and families sit in the open, staring at what little remains of their homes after last weekend’s devastating earthquake.
“We have nothing left to eat or drink, we need a tent,” said Saif Ur Rehman, Haider’s son.
The rough terrain is hindering relief efforts.
Taliban authorities have deployed helicopters and airdropped army commandos to help survivors.
