STORYLINE:
Protesters gathered in Chile’s capital on Saturday evening to show solidarity with the Palestinian people and call for an end to the Israel-Hamas war.
Santiago joined the Global Day of Action for Palestine, where flags were waved and a massive banner reading "Chile is anti-Zionist" was unfurled.
Protesters gathered outside the Inés de Suárez metro station, waving Palestinian flags and setting off flares.
Chile is home to the largest Palestinian community outside the Arab world, made up of descendants of different diasporas that began arriving in the country in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Many identify as Palestinians first and Chileans second, despite having been born on South American soil.
"I am a mother, I am a grandmother, and since all this began it has been very painful for me, even psychologically," protester Elizabeth Pendavis said on Saturday. "It is sad, very sad, because of everything Israel does with such ferocious, savage impunity."
Hamas-led militants killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducted 251 people in their attack on southern Israel that triggered the war on Oct. 7, 2023. Most have since been released in ceasefires or other agreements.
Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed more than 64,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not say how many were civilians or combatants but says women and children make up around half the dead.
Israel says the war will continue until all the hostages are returned and Hamas is disarmed, and that it will retain open-ended security control of the territory of some 2 million Palestinians. Hamas has said it will only release the remaining hostages in return for Palestinian prisoners, a lasting ceasefire and a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.
