STORYLINE:
Cash rained down on children in the Paraguayan city of Guarambare, south of the capital Asunción, on Sunday as Catholics celebrated a centuries-old feast in honor of the Virgin Mary.

The unique tradition involves community elders throwing money to children as a sign of gratitude for favors received from the Virgin.

Only the village’s elders are allowed to throw the cash, and only children are permitted to receive it.

The celebration, which dates back centuries, also includes prayers, traditional folkloric dances, and Paraguayan music.

On Sunday, a crowd gathered outside the Natividad de María church. People wore traditional Paraguayan dress and danced.

"This festival is always so beautiful, so traditional, so religious, and so profane at the same time," said Simona Paredes, who was celebrating outside the church.

Catalina Alvarenga said she was dancing for her and her family’s health and Simon Fernandez said it was important for people to keep traditions alive.
