2. SOUNDBITE (French) Mathilde Panot, French MP and president of far-left France Unbowed group in the National Assembly:
"(French Prime Minister Francois) Bayrou wanted a moment of truth and I believe he got it. But what the result shows, beyond even Bayrou’s government, is the sham of Macron’s people that is coming to light. Realise that only a third of the hemicycle gave its confidence to the Prime Minister. This means that Macron’s policy for the rich, in the service of the rich and of social war against the people received two-thirds of unfavourable votes in the hemicycle. So his policy represents a minority both in the National Assembly, but also in the country. It is therefore illegitimate that Bayrou and (ex-Prime Minister Michel) Barnier before him were able to continue the same policy at all costs, taking no account of the results of the (parliamentary) elections last June and July. We therefore say, in the face of this sham that is coming to light, that we do not want yet another Prime Minister who would lead and continue the same policy. And that therefore the question that is posed to the country is that of departure of a President of the Republic who refuses to respect the sovereignty of the people."

STORYLINE:
The head of the far-left France Unbowed party called for French President Emmanuel Macron’s resignation on Monday, after legislators toppled France’s government in a confidence vote.

"(French Prime Minister Francois) Bayrou wanted a moment of truth and I believe he got it," said Mathilde Panot, speaking to reporters after the vote.

"We do not want yet another Prime Minister who would lead and continue the same policy. And that therefore the question that is posed to the country is that of departure of a President of the Republic who refuses to respect the sovereignty of the people," Panot said.

The result on Monday marked a new crisis for Europe’s second-largest economy that obliges President Emmanuel Macron to search for a fourth prime minister in 12 months.

Prime Minister François Bayrou was ousted overwhelmingly in a 364-194 vote against him.

Bayrou paid the price for what appeared to be a staggering political miscalculation.

He gambled that lawmakers would back his view that France must slash public spending to repair its debts.

They instead seized on the vote that he called to gang up against Bayrou, a 74-year-old centrist who was appointed by Macron last December.
